The Best Way to See Croatia: A One-Week Sailing Itinerary ââ¬ÅThere was a palace, and out of a palace raised the city.ââ¬Â This well-known phrase is the actual history of the city of Split. In the year 256 AD Roman emperor Gaius Valerius Aurelius Diocletianus commissioned a building of a palace for his retirement, not knowing that he set the foundation for a city. As the inhabitants of the nearby Roman town Salona sought refuge inside the palaceââ¬â¢s walls shelter from Avaric and Slavic incomers, this started the transformation of Diocletianusââ¬â¢s palace into a City.
